Tri State Home Improvements, LLC suggests when choosing your home improvement company, consider the following interview warning signs that are posted by the National Association of Remodeling Industry. 

  • You cannot verify the name, address, telephone number or credentials of the remodeler. If the contractor will not give you his/her mobile phone number so you can have direct contact with them when they are not in the office.

  • Get addresses from the contractor of former clients so that you can drive by and check the details of workmanship.
  • Give no down payment until the job is started. Payments are usually - 1/3 down, 1/3 halfway and 1/3 when
        the job is finished and you are 100% satisfied. A 1/2 deposit is usually required for special orders, such as
        custom windows. Be mindful if they tell you they need the money to buy material.

  • The salesperson tries to pressure you into signing a contract.

  • The company or salesperson says your house will be used for advertising purposes so you will be given a
        "special low rate".

  • The builder/remodeler tells you a special price is available only if you sign the contract today.

    •  

  • Information you receive from the contractor is out-of-date or no longer valid.

  • You are unable to verify the license or insurance information.

  • You are asked to pay for the entire job in advance, or to pay in cash to a salesperson instead of by check or
        money order to the company itself. Checks should be made out to a company name, not an individual.

  • The contract does not offer, inform or extend notice of your right to cancel the contract within three (3)
         days. Notification in writing of your Right of Recision is required by law. The grace period allows you to change
         your mind and declare the contract null and void without penalty (if the agreement was solicited in some place
         other than the contractor's place of business or appropriate trade premises, in your home, for instance).
